Mend a Patch with your Playsilk

In a world that often favors the new over the old, there’s a quiet, joyful rebellion in mending what we already have. For those of us who appreciate the art of handcrafting and the philosophy behind Waldorf education, mending isn’t just a practical task—it’s a meaningful process that connects us to the past, encourages mindfulness, and celebrates the stories embedded in our garments.

By using a playsilk to repair your clothing, we not only restore a beloved garment but also make the repair itself a part of the garment’s story. In this post, we’ll explore how to transform a simple mending project into an opportunity for expression, reflection, and sustainability—one stitch at a time.

Gather Your Supplies:

These are the tools we used to Mend a Patch with your Playsilk:

• Playsilk
• Needle and thread (we used embroidery thread)
• Scissors
• Garment in need of repair

Mend a Patch with your Playsilk:

Step 1:  

Find a garment that is in need of repair.

Step 2: 

Using an old playsilk or scrap of fabric cut a square that covers the hole with about an inch extra on either side of the hole. 

Step 3: 

Fold the sides in on the square of playsilk and pin down over your hole.

Step 4: 

Using your thread sew long the edge of the match.

Step 5: 

Finish sewing the outside of the patch.

Step 6: 

For a stronger mend, sew within the patch - you can have fun with patterns here. Enjoy your visibly mended piece that is uniquely yours!
