Today on the blog our sweet friend Mahima, @thetoysareforme, teaches us how to make our own kite paper Diya to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights.
“Diwali, or Dipawali, is India’s biggest and most important holiday of the year." It is also an official holiday in many other countries including Nepal, Singapore, and Sri Lanka. "The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness.” - Learn more from National Geographic here.
Gather Your Supplies:
These are the tools we used to create our Kite Paper Diya Craft for Diwali:
- Kite Paper
- Scissors

- Tape
Create your Kite Paper Diya Craft for Diwali:
Step 1:
Cut your kite paper into four small squares.
Step 2:
Take one small square and begin to fold it into an accordion shape. Each fold should be about 1/4 inches.
Step 3:
Continue alternating the sides until the entire paper is folded.
Step 4:
Now fold this piece in half.
Step 5:
Glue one end and stick the two sides together. Allow glue to dry.
Step 6:
Open up your diya carefully until it’s almost a semicircle shape.
Step 7:
Use a yellow piece of kite paper to draw out a flame. Cut out and fold the end in order to glue onto your diya.
Step 8:
You can hang your diyas up on your windows with a little piece of tape on the flame portion of your craft!
Step 9:
Enjoy your new kite paper Diya!
